American Red Cross declares emergency blood shortage

ROCK HILL, S.C. (CN2 NEWS) – A few minutes of your time could save up to three lives.

The American Red Cross declaring a National blood shortage saying it is experiencing the lowest number of people giving blood in the last 20 years. Leaders are calling on everyone who can donate to please roll up their sleeves and donate.

CN2’s Renee O’Neil stopped by the American Red Cross Rock Hill Donation Center on Monday.

With wintry weather across the nation and coming off of the holiday season, Red Cross officials say numbers are low and the organization is coming up with a creative way to get donors through the door.

They say just by donating through the month of January you will be entered to win a trip for you and a guest to the Super Bowl LVIII in Las Vegas.

“January is National Blood Donor Month. It comes at this time because we might have that dip in blood supply. That’s for a number of different reasons. A lot of people get sick with the flu or the cold and they have to cancel those appointments. Also, winter weather makes a difference. We saw some winter weather just recently and that actually canceled more than 350 blood drives nationally which depleted our drive by about 11,000 blood units”, says Sharonne Hayes, American Red Cross, North Carolina Region Communications Manager.
You can find a place to donate by visiting the American Red Cross online, as well as downloading the Red Cross Blood Donor App. Officials say all types are needed.
