YC Council Continues Looking for Ways to Help Find Affordable Housing

YORK COUNTY, S.C. (CN2 NEWS) – Just because you may be able to afford it, doesn’t mean everyone can, and for that very reason, York County Council continues looking for ways to help.
The Council is in talks to either authorize, or deny, the rezoning of a mobile home park off York Highway at Mcafee Court. The rezoning comes before the potential construction of a new and improved mobile home park that owners say will seek to clean up the entire area and expand the amount of homes in the neighborhood.

A public hearing was held at the County Council meeting where several community members expressed both support and opposition on the matter.

Several of the Council Members expressed the need to provide York County with affordable housing opportunities and it did pass this first reading 6 to 1.

York Co. Council, District 4, William “Bump” Roddey said, “I’ve fought for tiny homes in the City of Rock Hill, and we’ve talked about tiny homes up here in York County. We have yet to make a move on what we can truly say is affordable. I have a 26 year-old daughter, no children, makes $13, $14 an hour, she has to stay with mom and dad, she has to stay with mom, she cant afford to go out and spend.”

While many are in support of the rezoning of the McAfee Court Mobile Home Park, several community members expressed the problems that could come with a newly built mobile home park.

One person noting that more homes would lead to more students in an already overcrowded school system, while others pointed out that this could make a high traffic highway much more dangerous.

Another public hearing and possible 2nd reading, is expected at the next council meeting.
