Lancaster School District Safety Protocols Pay Off On First Day Of Class

LANCASTER COUNTY, S.C. (CN2 NEWS) – Students have returned to their desks in Lancaster County School District and while learning is at the front of their minds, school officials are focused on keeping the classrooms safe.

Over the Summer several updates were made to the districts safety policies, including metal detectors at doors and volunteer safety monitors in halls.
School officials have been working overtime to ensure that they are prepared for the worst, and they hope that parents understand that these changes have been made to protect their children.

The district’s safety protocols were put to the test on the very first day of school this week, Monday, August 15th an 8th grade student was caught with a loaded pistol in his backpack at South Middle School.

The gun was reported by another student to the schools resource officer, who was then able to follow the correct protocol to detain the student and safely remove the weapon without anyone getting hurt.

While it was not an ideal way to start the school year, the districts safety and transportation director Bryan Vaughn says it proves the system works and that the procedures are needed in the district.
