Winthrop University Announces Commencement Ceremony

ROCK HILL, S.C. (CN2 NEWS) Winthrop University had to postpone its May Commencement ceremonies due to concerns about COVID-19. This Monday, May 4, the university’s Interim President George W. Hynd announced that the university is tentatively planning to hold a live Commencement ceremony for May graduate and undergraduate students — the ceremony will be held Saturday, August 15. The university states the number of ceremonies and times will be determined based on how many graduates will participate.

“This was not an easy decision as there remains much uncertainty about where we will be as a state and a nation in three months’ time,” says Winthrop’s Interim President George Hynd. “However, the committee and senior leadership felt strongly that students’ Winthrop experiences should not end without appropriate recognition and celebration. Therefore, we will remain hopeful about the status of gatherings in mid-August and will share more details as we move forward with our plans.”

Hynd says the week if May 4 will continue to be a time of celebration for graduates. The university plans to celebrate via social media and the university’s website — a new website will launch Saturday, May 9, when the university’s original Commencement ceremony was scheduled.

The university says May graduates should watch their emails for more details from Records and Registration about posting degrees, receipt of diplomas and other information.
