Culvert Replacement Requiring Road Closure and Detour around Old Bailes Road
Lancaster County is announcing the replacement of an existing, failed 8 foot diameter corrugated metal pipe culvert under Old Bailes Road in Indian Land approximately ¾ mile south of SC Highway 160. The work activity to replace the culvert is scheduled to begin on March 7, 2022 and complete road closure is expected to last 90 days.

The project consists of an open cut excavation approximately 20 feet deep across Old Bailes Road where the existing 8 foot diameter culvert will be demolished, removed and replaced with a cast in‐place 12 foot x 12 foot reinforced concrete box culvert approximately 53 feet long.
Motorists will be required to use Route 160 and Possum Hollow Road as an alternate route during the closure of Old Bailes Road.
This infrastructure improvement project also includes the installation of large block retaining walls on both ends of the culvert, increasing pavement and shoulder width over replaced culvert pipe, as well as installing new guardrails to meet current safety requirements. In order to minimize inconvenience for motorists, commencement of this project was delayed until the SC Highway 160 and Possum Hollow Road projects were completed.
This $855,000 construction project has been made possible in part by the award of a $500,000 grant from the Rural Infrastructure Authority.
