SOUTH CAROLINA (CN2 NEWS) Special Olympics South Carolina, or SOSC, says its continuing to watch COVID-19 cases in South Carolina. They say because of cases continuing rise throughout the state, SOSC is extending the cancellation of all in-person Special Olympics practices and competitions at the local and state levels through July 31.

The SOSC also says in the interest of the community, they are cancelling State Fall Games, which were scheduled to be held at Coastal Carolina University, in Conway, in October.

They say they believe canceling is the best course of action for the health and well-being of the SOSC family.

The SOSC says it will continue to evaluate the situation and will communicate any updates with the best interest of athletes, families, volunteers and coaches. SOSC leaders say they are working with all 16 of the local area programs to create ways to engage with athletes virtually.

They are encouraging local program athletes to arrange fitness and health activities that  athletes can perform from home and so they can continue to stay active during this time.

Special Olympics South Carolina says it provides year-round athletic training and competition for 30,000 children and adults with intellectual disabilities. They offer 27 Olympic type sports and hold more than 500 competitions annually.
