Winthrop University Students Observe MLK Through Acts of Service

 

 

ROCK HILL, S.C. (CN2 NEWS) Winthrop University’s MLK Day of Service is now a week-long celebration in honor of Dr. King.

Starting this Monday Winthrop students volunteered to plant 30 trees along Winthrop Lake area located behind the coliseum.

Chris Johnson, Winthrop’s Sustainability Coordinator, says, “We have 7 different species of tress that we’re spreading across the edge of the lake, we have some oak trees, some magnolias, some maples.”

Brandon Jackson, Winthrop’s Student Body President, says, “This is the kick off. So, we’re doing tree planting, so we’re planting trees 50 yards, 50 feet apart and you know sustainability giving back to the earth, mother nature you know, climate change is very important and its taking our nation and taking our world so future generations that come service projects like this is important.”

Service week will resume throughout the week at different locations around Winthrop’s campus and the Rock Hill.
