Winthrop President Dan Mahony Steps Down, Students React To Leadership Change

ROCK HILL, S.C. — It’s a bittersweet day on Winthrop University’s campus.

President Dan Mahony is taking the same job at Southern Illinois University. He says he feels blessed about his time here in Rock Hill and has had the opportunity to work with great people – but March 1st will be his last day.

The Southern Illinois University System serves more than 28,000 students on multiple campuses, employs more than 7,000 people and has a budget of about $867 million.

In comparison – Winthrop’s operating budget is just more than $130 million
and has around 6-thousand students – making the faculty and staff alone at Southern Illinois more than the student population at Winthrop.

Those students called him Dan the man on campus and some professors posting today they’re disappointment over the news.

In the video above, CN2’s Sarah Obeid talks about how Mahony has impacted students and the business community.
