South Carolinians Now Eligible For Additional 6 Weeks Of Unemployment Benefits

COLUMBIA, S.C. — In statewide news, South Carolinians are now eligible for another six weeks of unemployment benefits under the Extended Benefits Program.

The program provides up to 16 weeks of unemployment benefits.

The department of employment and workforce says this will be the last and final extension offered under federal law. To qualify, you must have exhausted both 20 weeks of regular unemployment benefits and 13 weeks of the pandemic emergency unemployment compensation program.

Extended Benefits eligibility is also more stringent.

Additionally, an Orangeburg County circuit judge signed a temporary restraint preventing the distribution of $32 million in emergency funding for private school tuition.

According to our news partner, WIS, the SAFE grants would help low-income students pay for private school.

An Orangeburg resident filed the lawsuit, which claims South Carolina Constitution says public funds cannot be given to religious or other private educational institutions.
