Mother’s Story Full of Hope

YORK COUNTY, S.C. (CN2 NEWS) A mom of five who’s been through it all.  Kristan Seaford was a 37-year-old mother of five who ran marathons and taught group exercise classes.  That is, until her life changed — practically overnight.

On a Sunday back in November of 2013, Seaford remembers feeling abnormally tired.

“I closed my eyes to take a rest and woke up after three weeks from a coma,” says Seaford.

What started out as the flu and strep throat turned into double pneumonia.  Soon after, an infection in her blood caused her to go into septic shock.  Doctors tried different treatments to save her.

“Those medications took all of the oxygen and nutrients away from my limbs – in order to focus on my internal organs – and so my hands and feet essentially died,” remembers Seaford.

Doctors were forced to amputate both of her hands, her left foot, and parts of her right foot.  In total, she spent more than 100 days in six different hospitals.

But this mom lived to tell the story.  She’s not only teaching aerobic and weight-training, but Seaford is also a licensed professional counselor, using her story to help others.

“I hope that I’m doing that for people with all kinds of struggles – some that you see and some that you don’t see.” Says Seaford.
