YORK COUNTY, S.C. — A person has died after a house fire in Rock Hill, according to several agencies.

The Lesslie Fire Department responded to a 911 call that came in around 3 p.m. on Monday at Hopewell Road off Springdale Road.

The road was closed because of the fire.

The departments’ fire chief Tommy White confirmed the fire was caused by food left unattended cooking on an oven and there was someone stuck inside the home.

“When we arrived, we had fire coming out of all areas of the house,” John Boyd, a firefighter and EMT with Lesslie Fire, said. “We were immediately notified too that there was the possibility of a person being trapped inside. We also had Rock Hill engine three and ladder five to respond with us and they helped us out tremendously as far as man power goes and we greatly appreciate it.”

While the York County coroner has not yet released more details, Chief White did confirm that there were multiple people in the home when the fire started and sadly, there was a death in the home.

The York County Sheriff’s Office was also out at the scene investigating and securing the area.

“A couple of hours ago, we were only here for traffic control because there was a report of somebody possibly inside the house, that was stuck inside the house,” Trent Faris with the York County Sheriff’s Office said. “And, sadly this has turned out to be a tragedy, so we’re here to investigate a death as far as the sheriff’s offer side of things. Until we can get further details and inside the house, all I can tell you right now is we believe that it was an accidental fire.”

The York County Sheriff’s Office comes out to manage traffic and they come out any time there is a death to investigate.

Right now, the sheriff’s office says they have no reason to believe that this was anything other than an accident.
