Juneteenth Rock Hill Celebration Of Freedom Goes Virtual This Year

ROCK HILL, S.C. — Juneteenth Rock Hill, a celebration of freedom, is going virtual this year.

You can expect presentations from local artists, poets and musicians, all online to spread the message of why we celebrate Juneteenth.

In the video above, CN2’s Renee O’Neil speaks with the president of the event. She shares more on the celebration and the meaning behind it.

“So, Juneteenth is recognized as an observance marking the ending of slavery here in the United States, and June 1965 is considered that the last slaves were free in America, so later June 19th was shortened to Juneteenth, and that’s how we got the name Juneteenth,” Tamika Poag said.

Poag talks more on how it came to Rock Hill and why it became a bigger event.

You can enjoy the Juneteenth event today, Friday, June 19th at 7 p.m. on Juneteenth Rock Hill’s Facebook and Instagram pages or juneteenthrockhill.com.
