DEC 14, 2009: ROCK HILL, SC -- According to local officials, each month hundreds of animals are put down in York County and one man is doing what he can to reduce that number.
He is a pilot whom, along with help from the Animal Adpotion League, will fly in to cities saving dogs from high kill shelters. CN2's Emily Ramsey was with this 25-year-old pilot as he brought his mission to Rock Hill Saturday for the first time.
The Rock Hill Airport is usually not home to so many of man's best friend but today it's going to the dogs.
Throughout the Carolinas and Georgia, advocates say animal overpopulation is a huge problem. Depending on the shelter where they end up, many dogs have to be put to sleep because of overcrowding.
Rescue groups, like Cloud 9 Rescue Flights, fly in to save these dogs, taking them to shelters up north where stricter spay and neuter laws have led to much lower euthanasia rates.
"The fact that these animals are going to get a better second chance at life is the most rewarding thing I do," said Ted DuPuis, Founder and Pilot for Cloud 9 Rescue Flights.
Ted says that, while he likes to save animals, he says his trips can be prevented.
"There are some problems in this world that are really difficult to solve, but this one is not. Have your animals spayed and neutered," he added.
A simple act that could help our four-legged friends.
Those dogs landed in Syracuse, New York Saturday afternoon and were taken to several no-kill animal shelters. Cloud 9 saves more than just dogs, it will transport children and adults to various hospitals to help them recieve medical attention.
