NOV 6, 2009: FORT MILL, SC -- There is not a fully operating hospital in Fort Mill just yet but that doesn't mean you can't deliver a baby there.

The town is now home to the area's first official birthing centr, which is a place where moms-to-be can bring their bundles of joy into the world, without ever feeling like they left home.

The Fort Mill Community Maternity Center opened its doors late last month and says it is seeing a steady flow of mothers wanting a safe place to have a natural child birth.

The birthing center is staffed by licensed mid-wives who oversee pregnancy from beginning through labor and even after the baby is born. There are special delivery rooms that look more like your bedroom at home and they even offer small pools for those who choose to have a water birth.

"We just feel this is a way that promotes and empowers women to believe in their bodies and the natural childbirth process and we are just here to facilitate," said Lisa Johnson with the Carolina Community Maternity Center.

The center says it chose Fort Mill because mid-wife assisted at home births are not allowed in North Carolina. They say the location allows mothers from the Charlotte area to use their services as well.
